The National Institutes of Health (NIH)/Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL), 5th Edition is the code of practice for biosafety and biocontainment in the United States. CRC led the Steering Committee and the Section IV – Laboratory Biosafety Level Criteria Advisory Committee. As technical editor, CRC developed, coordinated and published the schedule and agenda for these meetings which lasted 1 – 3 consecutive days. Major activities included:
- Prepared distribution email list; retained official list of members, titles and contact information.
- Scheduled meetings and conference room with teleconference abilities using NIH Events Management support.
- Provided all documentation to committee members.
- Prepared meeting minutes and captured assigned tasks.
- Followed up on assigned tasks.
- Verified all reference materials.
- Compiled all Sections and submitted for production.
- Reviewed galley.
- Assisted in book printing production and distribution.
- Made electronic book meet Section 508 compliance.
Technical Accomplishments
- Scheduled and arranged meetings for committee members.
- Assisted government with coordination of timely updates to BMBL drafts.
- Collaborated with the NIH management to provide laboratory occupational health and safety and biosafety guidance.
- Planned and tracked assignments for each committee member.
- Executed recruitment activities for participation in Section IV – Laboratory Biosafety Level Criteria Advisory Committee representing government, higher education and private sector.
- Managed and coordinated functions of the Steering Committee.
- Provided meeting support services including scheduling meetings and meeting places, leading meetings, taking notes, following up on questions and issues, arranging conference calls, arranging travel when necessary.
- Materials were approved by DOHS management/COR.
- Maintained branding (i.e. cover and art) for BMBL.
- Arranged travel for committee members as needed.
